Understanding Glaucoma and its Causes

Glaucoma is commonly known as “the sneak thief of sight” as there are no warning signs or symptoms of early stage glaucoma. Its also the leading cause of blindness in the United States, especially for those 55+.

Glaucoma is a disease that targets the optic nerve; the nerve that carries the images we see to the brain. While the exact causes of optic nerve damage from glaucoma is not fully understood, it involves mechanical compression and/or decreased blood flow of the optic nerve.

The only sure way to diagnose glaucoma is by seeing your Ophthalmologist for a complete, comprehensive eye examination. Your doctor will do several tests and evaluations during your comprehensive exam to diagnose or rule out glaucoma.
